SSI currently only offers online learning for their Open Water Course but it is FREE OF CHARGE. If you wish to study other courses before you get here then contact us and we can arrange for materials to be sent to you.
PADI offer eLearning for; Scuba Review, Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Photography, Nitrox and Rescue, Dive Master and Instructor Courses. Some online courses offer greater holiday-time saving benefits than others.
PADI costs
PADI set the on-line course fees on a global level and as Koh Tao is one of the cheapest places in the world to learn to dive, this doesn’t offer the equivalent saving in costs in local terms. Had you chosen to take your courses in other parts of the world where the fees can be more than double what we charge on Koh Tao, then you might see more of a saving.
The real saving however is time, which can be very precious on holiday. Below we have outlined our thoughts on each course so that you can decide which courses to take on-line.

While you can refresh your knowledge online before you come, in practice, the quiz that we give you to review doesn’t take long. We review this information with you too. We ensure that you are reminded of the most important aspects of diving before getting in the water to review the practical aspects of diving. However, if you are keen to get back into it then taking the theory online will give you some foundation before coming. However, we will still need to review your learning via a quiz to check that you have understood everything.

Studying the Open Water theory online before you arrive will save you a huge amount of time. The course usually runs across three and a half days but if you have completed your theory before you get here it will reduce your attendance over this time dramatically. This will allow you more time to relax and enjoy the island.
You will watch the course videos and undertake you knowledge development online before you get here. This will minimize your time in the classroom and make for a more relaxing schedule. Don’t worry though, you will have review time with your instructor so that you can go over any concepts you would like more explanation on.
As the course is performance based and not time based we do recommend that divers still allow 3 and a half days and join the water work over a normal course schedule. This then gives you extra time should you need it to complete and master the skills required. However we can conduct the course over 2 and half days continuously should you be short on time.

The theoretical part of this course is not as intense as other courses but it does have a little reading. We find that divers need just a few hours (maybe relaxing on the beach, by the pool or watching sunset) to complete their reading and we spend a few hours elaborating on, and developing this too. The course is essentially a practical one and the time you would save completing this before you get here is not as great as other courses. However it’s a great way to build the excitement for your holiday if you want to dive right in.

The Rescue Diver Course is quite an intensive course both in the water and in the classroom and we strongly recommend that you complete this theory before you come. It will ensure that you do not spend some evenings reading and reviewing. It will allow you to concentrate on the many new skills and techniques that you are going to be learning in the water. Further it will relieve you of the added demand that the theoretical component can be – particularly on holiday.

The Photography Course is great fun to combine with any diving holiday but doing the learning online before you get here will familiarize your with the concepts. It will also give you time to apply these learning’s to your camera settings and get used to its functionality before going anywhere near the water.
