Ever since his Dad threw him into the deep pool as a kid, Josh has loved the water. However the surface was never quite enough, and he used to get into trouble in school swimming lessons for continuously disappearing under the surface for worrying periods of time!
“I think there's a peace and freedom from being fully submerged that you just can't experience any other way, and so my first breaths underwater were natural, yet life changing. I completed my Open Water Course in a small green lake in the UK, close to my university where I was studying Psychology. The water was cold, the visibility was minimal, and there were only around ten fish in the whole lake... but it blew my mind, I loved it, I was hooked. “
After three trips abroad to dive in warmer waters, he knew upon graduation he’d be leaving academia behind to become a scuba instructor. He’d always enjoyed coaching and teaching, and therefore a life of not only diving, but also introducing others to the underwater world was a dream come true.
Although no longer in the library, he still loves to learn, and so becoming an instructor was by no means the end of a journey but the start of one. He readily admits to wanting to know everything he can about diving; the physics, the physiology, the equipment, the marine life and ecosystems. So in his free time you'll often find him researching with his friend Google or lost in his Kindle. He’s already learnt a lot about the environment and how to protect it better through conservation, and is avid at passing this knowledge onto others to help protect and preserve our ocean planet. Oh, and did we mention he’s the reigning ‘Mr Save koh Tao’? As voted by both the public and a panel of judges at the annual Save Koh Tao Festival!
